Question of the Week

Brian Lowell French

Hi Folks,

I’m happy to share with you an activity that I came up with decades ago in my management career and have used it ever since. I call it the “Question of the Week” and it is one of the most effective team-strengthening activities you can do with your team. And it’s also extremely easy and doesn’t take much time. It is simply using get-to-know-you types of questions, but doing so in a formal way as part of the regular team-meetings. It’s an amazing way to get the team-meetings started off with a strong feeling of “team” (and it helps the rest of the meeting go much better, even if the topic is a bit difficult).

This activity is included as part of our Harmonic Teaming Program and within our “Harmonic Team-Building: In the Bag” product (which the team receives during the Teaming program or can be ordered separately).

We stress that a key part of strengthening a team comes from creating familiarity among the team-members. Many teams unfortunately never take the time to get to know each other beyond the very surface areas of the workplace. People naturally feel more of a kinship and provide a greater level of support to those who they know well.

The relatively small amount of time that it takes for people to share their story during the team-meetings will pay dividends in many ways throughout the life of the team. It increases collaboration and productivity, and decreases misunderstandings and tension. This provides many practical benefits to the team and organization (in terms of both overall morale and happiness, to the obvious financial benefits).
